Milestones
The area’s earliest settlers were thought to be the Cahuilla Indians who enjoyed the richness and beauty of the land over 2,000 years ago. Traces from their time can be seen in the petroglyphs which are visible today.
At one time La Quinta was blanketed by an ancient lake which dried up in the 1600s. However, the shoreline is still visible against the mountains.
In the 1800s, cotton and sugar cane were farmed and cattle were also introduced.
In December 1926, Walter Morgan opened the La Quinta Hotel which became a sanctuary for the stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era.
